Mesmerhaus

Bildstein, Vorarlberg, Austria

Modern feel-good atmosphere in a monument: The historic Mesmerhaus by Evi and Jürgen Haller is a real highlight for architecture fans looking for peace and quiet. As part of the "Ensemble von Bildstein", which is under monument protection, the more than 200-year-old house has been carefully renovated by the hosts.

Today it accommodates guests from all over the world in three holiday apartments of 30, 50 and 180 square meters. Together, the penthouse Ludovika and the two apartments Franz Josef and Maria form a stylish, historical holiday oasis with a unique all-round view of Lake Constance, the Rhine Valley and the gently rolling hills and forests of Vorarlberg. The name "Mesmerhaus" goes back to Evi's great-grandfather, who worked part-time as a "Mesmer" (Austrian for sexton) in the pilgrimage church Basilica Maria Bildstein. T he scenic beauty, high quality of life and sophisticated hospitality make a stay in the Mesmerhaus an unforgettable holiday experience.

Culture and architecture lovers will also get their money's worth in nearby Bregenz - venue of the Bregenz Festival and many other festivals - and in Feldkirch, Hohenems and Dornbirn. So-called "ArchitecTours", including weekly tours by host and architect Jürgen Haller, provide comprehensive insights into the architectural state of Vorarlberg. The Bregenzerwald is a region for nature fans and lovers of beautiful things, the landscape is diverse and invites you to hike, cycle and climb in summer and to ski and toboggan in winter. And if you are drawn to the water, you can reach nearby Lake Constance in just 15 minutes.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe Mesmerhaus is a historic building that is over 200 years old and is a listed building that combines nostalgia, romance and modern design. It was completely renovated by the hosts Evi and Jürgen Haller under the supervision of the Federal Monument Protection Office and the Cultural Office. During the renovation work, the preservation of the old building structure had the highest priority - where this was not possible, old components - such as the historical casement windows - were faithfully and extensively reproduced. The original door leaf with the year and the initials of Evi's ancestor Franz Josef Böhler was also put back on the front door. On the outside, the listed house with the clapboard facade and the many windows has hardly been changed. Inside, on the other hand, the design is timeless, straightforward, modern and yet homely. Brushed oak floors, modern lighting design with indirect lighting, Italian designer pieces and Vorarlberg carpenter's furniture ensure a relaxing and luxurious feel-good atmosphere.

EnvironmentThe use of ecological building materials ensures a long service life and scores points in terms of sustainability. Regionality played a major role during the renovation: the wood for the spruce ceilings, spruce log shingles and oak floors comes from the region. The apartments are heated via the local district heating network. In the penthouse Ludovika there is also a fireplace in the dining room and a storage stove in the attic.
