Domaine Castelsec

Roquefort des Corbières, Occitanie, France

In the Domaine Castelsec you are far away from all the hustle and bustle. Here there is only a view of the sea, a lot of nature with all sorts of rare orchids and lizards warming up in the sun. In the middle of the Parc Naturel de la Narbonnaise natural park is the property of Mireille Courtier, who decided a few years ago to share her paradise with other nature lovers.

Born in Paris, she has built a real eco-home and lives completely self-sufficient out here: The house is made entirely of natural materials, the energy is generated from renewable sources and the water comes from a local spring. More eco is not possible.

Telephone, television and internet are only available via satellite. Nothing distracts from the wild and untouched nature. (Unless you're busy playing with one of Mireille's three cute dogs). The sprightly Frenchwoman, who worked as a teacher in Hesse for a long time, loves to explain the diverse flora and fauna to her guests and gives lots of tips for exploring the area. After sunset, the wooden terrace invites you to dream while contemplating the imposing constellations.

Conclusion: If you want to be surrounded by nature and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the landscape between mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, this is the place for you. The beautiful landscape has inspired many artists and has also served as a film set.

The surrounding area is also worth a visit. For example to Roquefort, a peaceful village inhabited mainly by winegrowers and international artists. Many hiking trails in the surrounding area start from there. Not far from Castelsec is the port of Port La Nouvelle, which is not only the second largest commercial port in the Mediterranean, but is also a popular place with families thanks to its long sandy beaches.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe main building where the owner lives dates from the 16th century. Frenchwoman Mireille Courtier bought it in 1980 and completely renovated it in 2009. The cottage is made of wood, the walls are made of a clay-straw mixture and are insulated with cotton or sheep&

EnvironmentHere, far removed from any civilisation, ecological and resource frugal living is absolutely necessary. The house does not draw any energy from outside. Electricity and heat are produced by an in-house photovoltaic and solar heating system. The water comes from a 363 meter deep well. The waste water is clarified with a private sewage treatment plant. Garbage is separated but not composted to avoid attracting wild animals such as wild boar. Mireille Courtier is active in the bird protection association.
